The Moment When Tim McGraw Discovered Who His Dad Was

He had been searching for quarters in a Crown Royal bag full of coins to buy a candy bar when he found the box.

Upon examining the birth certificate, McGraw noticed that "McGraw" had been crossed out, and "Smith" – his stepfather's surname – was handwritten above it in pencil. More strikingly, the document listed his father's occupation as "professional baseball player." Growing up in a "low low middle class" family with little money, this revelation was difficult for the young McGraw to comprehend, feeling "so hard to register" and "didn't seem real."

Adding to the surreal nature of the discovery, McGraw realized he had a personal connection to this information. He revealed that he had three baseball cards displayed on his wall, and one of them was of his biological father, who was one of his favorite players. The immediate aftermath involved him calling his mother, who was at work, to question her about the birth certificate.

McGraw described his mother's reaction as if it "hit her like a ton of bricks," with her only initial response being, "Oh my god." The conversation was cut short with his mom stating she would be right there.
